Clannad After Story

The second second of Clannad based off of the visual novel game by Key. The anime follows right after the first season. Since this will obviously spoil the first season the rest of this post will be under a "read more."

For the first 1/3 of the second season covers the rest of Tomoya's last year of high school and focuses on side character's story. After them the show shifts mainly on Tomoya and Nagisa's love life when they graduate and become adults. The side characters have their own plans so they hardly show up. From time to time it does show the other world with the girl and her robot friend, but for most of the show their purpose in the story is still unclear.

Compare to the first season this adult life they take on has a very fitting adult context. I think that the struggle they go through is very human that it hurts. To me this season is quite sad because of it. I rarely every cry from anime, but I cried a lot during this show its ridiculous. And most of the scenes I cried where the character just being a good person that its so touching, and I got to hand it to the writer and staff behind this show for doing that. I'm not even attached to any of these characters!

Despite it not being quite exciting and slow pace for someone people I do highly recommend this anime! I will say a few things about some big spoilers in this show below so if you don't want to read them please skip!

I did enjoy the side characters' story except for Sunohara the other school boy in the cast that's best friend's with Tomoya. I really enjoyed Misae's past love story even though it is a little weird that he's the cat. The subtle character development of Tomoya's trying to be an adult is at times cheesy especially when he tries to do his best at his new job which he got quite easily also when he was asking Nagisa her hand in marriage. Their relationship is so innocent we really didn't see them kiss, and they even slept in separate futons. Despite that they really do love each other so it is kind of refreshing to see that they don't really need to be all touchy to prove it. They didn't have a wedding episode Probably due to her love for Big Dango family that she wanted a child. I already knew that she was going to die beforehand so it was kind of obvious how it will happen. When it did happen it was quite sad. Though it wasn't as sad as what happens afterwards. The show skips to 5 years later when Tomoya becomes a mess after Nagisa's passing. He left his daughter in the care of Nagisa's parents for 5 years. Its quite bothered me that he had done this to his own daughter, but it did setup a good way to fix Tomoya's other issue which is his own father that he despised. Realizing that what he's doing is the same as his own father, and he made a complete change to be a proper father as well as a proper son. I don't even like Tomoya, but it didn't stop the tears when I watch these touching moments. It continues to show the peaceful family life between Tomoya and his daughter Ushio till she falls ill with the same mysterious illness as Nagisa. It doesn't look good at all till Tomoya finally gives in to her wish to go on a trip in the middle of winter. They barely went far till Ushio collapses. Then the story gets really confusing here. It shifts to the other world where it finally reveals that the girl is an alternate Ushio and the robot doll is Tomoya. The world collapses and we return back to Ushio's birth where Nagisa survived and then a montage of their happy life. It gets stranger when it switches to Fuko and her older sister Ibuki and Fuko finds Ushio under a tree and for an instant Ushio had the appearance of the girl from the other world. At the end of the episode it said "end." I learn later that since Tomoya has gained enough lights that he gets from helping others achieve happiness that he was able to have his wish to turn back time and save Nagisa and Ushio. The next episode is an extra story that takes place a year before Tomoya and Nagisa met. It has a cute connection between Nagisa and Tomoya with a prank.

The ending wasn't exactly what I expected since having your wish to go back and change time is cheap. Though I suppose it be hard to find a decent with the way its setup with the other illusionary world. The anime has a lot of good points though its hard to really make it a top personal favorite despite how well done it is. The story is well done though it is slow and a tad bland and none of the characters really stuck with me as they are also a tad bland. I do think its worth watching since it has a lot very good life morals of friendship, love, parenthood, and just life in general.
