Kimetsu no Yaiba or Demon Slayer is a shounen anime in a world where people can get turned into demons and eat people. Story takes place in Japan during the Taisho Era (1912-1926) and we follow a boy name Kamado Tanjirou who travels with his little sister Nezuko who got turned into a demon. His goal is to find a way to turn her back into a human which involves becoming part of the Demon Slayer Corps. Ufotable is the studio animating this and they did such an excellent job as every episode so far is so well done. There's also a lot of top seiyuus in this and they were on point! For a shounen story, I am impressed with the kind of mature tones this has. It actually made me shed some tears. I definitely recommend this series!!
Some of the demons are starved craved monsters, and others have more of their senses. Its a great mix of demon and human that makes it bittersweet when they get killed. This bittersweetness is something that I love in Natsume Yuujinchou, and this series is like that with the action of a shounen series. The music is also really great. Things so change up once Tanjirou gets teamed up with other demon slayers.
There's lots of praises of this show from people and I do think these praises are well founded. But don't go in with high expectation as it will water down the great moments this show has done so far. One of the things I'm not a fan of is that need to repeat what happened in the last episode. This usually happens in the beginning before the OP starts. Also instead of a preview they make a cute comedy like thing at the end which sort of kills the serious tone the story has been. Its odd.
The Rising of the Shield Hero is another isekai anime. The main character Iwatani Naofumi is a an otaku who went to the library and got sucked into a book. He an several other Japanese men got summoned to fulfill the Hero roles and save the world, and they cannot go back until they fulfilled it. The episode is like 50 minutes long which gives a good amount of time to really set the tone and get to know the character.
What sets this isekai anime apart from the others is that the main character had a really bad start. So for me that sort of makes me want to root for him and see how he will handle this challenge. I am a bit worried since the second main character is a loli character so it did make things a little weird. But I will keep watching to see how it goes cause I am liking it so far.
Dororo is an anime I wasn't sure about at first glance, but I gave it a try when people recommended it and I'm glad. Its so far one of my favorites this season. I like the whole fighting demons and just the whole aesthetic of the anime. Dororo is the name of the young boy who is a orphan an a thief. He sees this young man fight a demon and he ends up following him. This young man named Hyakkimaru has prosthetic arms with swords hidden inside them and he can't talk or see because he was born without organs. His father made a deal with demons and they took his son's organs and was cast away. But he lives and able to regain his parts of his body back.
The manga this is based off of is old, and it seems like there were anime adaptations before but they are old as well. This new adaptation is looking good in my opinion. I like the art and animation so far. There's only two episodes out so far, but I am looking forward to see how this goes.
Hinomaruzumou is a sports anime on sumo wrestling. I know that this may not sound appealing for some since we'd think of nearly naked big men go at each other however this anime is plenty of muscles going on as well. It follows one of the usual sports anime stories of forming a nearly started club. The members they got are different and has the tropey kind of personalities which isn't too bad here. It is entertaining and even exciting at times. I've heard manga readers are disappointed that this anime adaptation had cut out some stuff, but as someone who didn't read the manga the story so far is fine.
The pacing is pretty good as well, and both the OP and ED are enjoyable that I don't skip it very much. The main character is Ushio Hinomaru and one of those super strong kind of characters but it also below average height. I do like these kind of characters probably since I'm also short. You don't ever see these kind of characters in western media either. The other characters are also enjoyable in their own way. I'm definitely enjoying it and it has made comparisons between sumo and other fighting types of sports which is interesting. This anime does show that realistic aspect of people not being interested in sumo and it does well to make sumo look like an interesting sport. Overall this sumo anime is rather decent and would recommend it.
This anime doesn't have the catchiest title, but its a decent isekai anime that I would recommend people to check it out. Its about a Japanese man who, as the title says, got reincarnated as a slime in a fantasy world. The story has a more fun tone and since the slime wants to do good its a feel good show.
Since the slime is a monster he meets other monsters as well as humans. I don't want to spoil the show too much, but its a great show. The pacing is slow but the script is great as we get to learn more about the world along with the slime. There isn't a serious tone in the first few episodes, but things do get a bit more serious as we learn more about the world. The show overall is fun and entertaining so I highly recommend it!
Tsurune is a sports anime on Japanese archery, Kyuudou. The word tsurune is the whistle sound that can happen when you fire your arrow. Kyoani is animating this so the art and animation are gorgeous! Also I'm glad they're doing another largely male cast anime. This anime is about the boys who joined their high school archery club. The club is co-ed so there are some girls there too and they're great as well.
The story follows Minato who has been doing archery for awhile, but stopped when he no longer could hit the target. This is called target panic and it be a story of him trying to overcome it. One night he meets Masaki whose archery has inspired him. Also Masaki, or Masa-san, is gorgeous! He's also older and a very likable character. So I'm definitely a lot more into this anime because of him.
There isn't many episodes out so there isn't much else to say. Cute dog and owl are in this anime. There are still more characters that haven't spoken yet. The pacing is decent and just a pretty quality show so far. I definitely recommend giving this a shot!
Kaze ga Tsuyoku Fuiteiru is an anime about a group of college boys who got kind of tricked into joining the track and field club. This is a sports anime but its quite different not only because the characters are college age but the story is different.
The story is a slower pace than normal sports anime, and its in a more mature tone. Haiji has been recruiting students to live in the apartment building. He needs ten and finds Kakeru and makes him stay at the building. Haiji then tells them all that they're now a part of track and field, and they must run with him every morning so they can train for Hakone Eiken which is a prominent relay marathon race. What sets this anime apart from other sports anime is that the majority of the characters do not want to run. So this anime mainly focuses on the characters struggle with this situation. So far its hard for me to tell if they will even get to Hakone, or if the running is just a way to get some character development kind of stories into the 10 guys.
If you want a chill mature kind of sports anime I would recommend this. Its definitely a slow build up, but I've gotten to like it quite a bit the more I watch. Also the art and animation is great!
Banana Fish is an anime adaptation of an old BL manga. This is not your typical BL as it has a dramatic story to it rather than romance. Story is two Japanese guys who went to New York city and got caught up in mafia trouble. This mafia deals in pimping out kids and selling drugs. The two Japanese guys and some others help a young guy name Ash Lynx who wants to stop the boss of the mafia.
Some people might pass on this because its BL, but this is just as good as any other drama anime. I haven't read the manga but it does look like they kept much of the art style and the storytelling. It does have a dated feel to the story, but I think it still holds up. It has quite a lot of action, and the pacing is a little bit fast. So I think this anime is worth watching if you wanted an action anime with BL
Shingeki no Bahamut is an action fantasy anime that has demons, angels, and of course humans. There's plenty of characters named after gods from different religions and even historical figures. The first season, Genesis, is 12 episodes long is about two male humans, Favaro and Kaisar, involvement with a girl name Amira who needs to go to Helheim.Season 2, Virgin Soul, is 24 episodes long
The art and animation in this anime is beautiful. Even though I don't really like the main characters. they were really nice to look at. The story of Genesis is ok. The story is mainly preventing Bahamut from reviving. There are a few side characters that I do like and mostly just watched this show for them and the art. I do like the designs of the demons and angels too. Lucifer only had like a minute of screen time in the whole 1st season, but damn is he pretty and sparkly. Amira is pretty too, but she is pretty much a kid in an adult body. Then there's Rita who is a loli character, but is like 200 years old so she's been the most reasonable character so I ended up liking her. She gets shit done.
In Virgin Soul, a new girl joins the main cast and her name is Nina. I don't find her as annoying as Amira as I find her getting flustered at every handsome young men to be entertaining. Story in this second season is a bit different as the new human king has been enslaving demons and defeating the gods. The story in the season is much more interesting to me. I don't think watching the first season is vital to understand the second season. I enjoyed the main cast a lot in this and the side characters weren't bad as well. I'm not too into the romantic shoujo/otome like part of this story but I can see why its there.
Overall, I definitely recommend this series! No word yet on whether there be a season 3, but if there is I would watch it.
This is a movie anthology so it has three separate stories. The studio who made this is the same as Kimi no Na Ha so the art its gorgeous, but Shinkai isn't the director but the writer is a Chinese guy. All the stories in this movie are set in China and are about Chinese characters. These are nice little short stories. None of them are dramatic so its a nice easy watch. They may not be as interesting as a Shinkai movie, but its a nice portrayal of modern Chinese culture.
First story is called Sunny Breakfast, and its about a young male student who seem to regularly eat a certain type of noodle soup dish. He reflects to his past on how much his noodle soup eating moments has changed throughout his life. The metaphor here seems to be the technological changes as he grew up on the soup made from a couple owned shop to the chain shop he goes to in the city. He describes how different he shops made the soups and how different they taste. This might be a story that I think many people could kind of relate to. There may be a childhood restaurant that is not longer there or has changed over the years. Or I guess any store that may have closed due to technological advances.
Second story is A Little Fashion Show which is about two sisters. The story is about relationships (not romantic) and is rather straightforward. The older sister is tall and is a successful model. She is supporting her little sister and both are living together in the city. The little sister is currently in school and studying fashion design. The conflict here is the older sister having career troubles due to her age, and struggling to keep up that reliable older sister look to her little sister. This story is nice as I'm also an older sister so its a bit relatable on it can be tough to have to be the older sibling.
The third and last story is called Shanghai Love. This story is about three childhood friends who end up going on different life paths. The story focuses on two of the friends, a boy and a girl, who have a crush on each other. But due to parental high expectations both had set those feelings aside to focus on studies thus making their friendship rocky. When the boy is an adult he finds a cassette tape that the girl made that he never got to listen to that makes him remember his childhood. I'm sure there are people who may have lost touch with childhood friends due to schooling. Or even have kept items or keepsakes that would remind them of these old friends.
Overall I do like the movie so if you got an hour to kill, please watch this! The animation on the food in the first story is gorgeous by the way.
I didn't think a season 3 for Free! will be real but its here and its airing at the moment. If you haven't read the light novels, the High Speed! movie, or the 3 compilation movies (Yakusoku, Kizuna, Time Medley) then you will be a bit lost when you start watching this new season.
This season takes place a year after season 2 Eternal Summer so many of the characters are separated so there's a bit of jumping around since they want everyone to appear in this new season. But the main focus is always on Haru and this time it seems a reunion of his middle school relay team. Haru happens to go to the same college as two of his middle school friends, Asahi and Kisumi. They find out that another middle school swim member, Ikuya, is in Japan and still swims. They want to meet and talk to him, but a guy name Hiyori is trying to prevent them from seeing Ikuya.
So far, this new season is pretty good. It is quite different due to the new setting and having to change the story telling a bit to accommodate everybody. The first few episodes is slow paced since they need to add some backstory. Also Utsumi is no longer part of Free! so that also adds to the difference in this season but the writer is the same. I am curious to see how the story unfold so I will continue to watch it. I haven't seen enough to say whether I can recommend it or not. So far it doesn't have silly fun scenes as in the previous episodes nor does it have edgy dubstep for the antagonist as there was before. Its pretty mellow in comparison which I don't mind. I like how more calm and less dramatic this season is so far, but it could all change later. Everybody seems to dislike Hiyori which is understandable. Can't wait to see how Kyoani will redeem him later.
This is an anime on cells in your body and its rather entertaining as well as educational. The systems in your body are like cities, towns, and streets. All the cells are humans with a job. Each type of cell has a certain design and even a certain kind of personality. Each episode so far shows how the cells work in different situations like a abrasion or influenza.
I hear the information is accurate so this can help students! The main characters are a female red blood cell, and a male white blood cell. They don't have an actual human name other than being called what cell they are and an ID like number to differentiate from other cells of the same type. What makes this anime entertaining is that its like a shounen where when some bad happens its quite dramatic and chaotic. The bacteria and all the bad stuff are designed like monsters and the cells that fight them off get quite violent. Its all done in a comedic way as well so it makes it a bit fun which makes learning about cells fun. So I recommend this anime to everyone!
This is an kind of steam punkish boxing anime where the boxers wear a machine device on their shoulders and arms. The story follows JD (Junk Dog) a non-citizen who is tired of the underground ring, and wants to be on the big ring called Megalonia.
The show doesn't have that typical anime look, so it can be accessible to those who may dislike that anime style. The vibe of the show is pretty cool even though I'm not interested in boxing. The story hasn't fully got me interested, but I will keep watching to see if it'll pick up. The art and animation is nice though, and JD is voiced by Hosoya who I'm a fan of. I may update this post as more episodes release.
The anime version of the Persona 5 game! The animation isn't the best, but its not bad. There is some new music for the anime so I do like that since the game's soundtrack is pretty great. The pacing of the anime is a bit quick so it may be a bit jarring for anyone who doesn't know the story. The game is like a 100 hours long so condensing it into the usual anime format it would cut some things. Though if you don't have the time or money to play the game, the anime is a good option to enjoy it.
Personally, I am enjoying it since the main protagonist character looks better in the anime style than his 3D model in the game in my opinion. I do like his design so I'm glad to be able to see more of him, and him talking since he barely talked in the game. Also his name in the anime, Amamiya Ren, is a nicer name than the manga name Kurusu Akira. There's only two episode so far, and I've enjoyed it. I may update this post once I watched more episodes to really say whether I'd recommend it or not.
I started watching this out of curiosity and I got hooked. This is an anime of the Layton games but its Layton's daughter that is the protagonist. I never played the games that she is in so I had no idea what she is like. Her name is Katrielle and she has her own boy assistant and a dog assistant that can talk but only her and the boy can understand him. The stories and mysteries in Layton games are wild and creative, and this anime has that as well. I mean, the anime has already made me cry because the story was quite emotional.
If you suck at puzzle like myself, luckily this anime doesn't focus a lot on making you figure out the puzzles. It does seem to rush a bit during the puzzling part too so you really don't got a lot of time to even figure it out yourself unless you pause it. But I am going to continue watching this for the story than the puzzles. Even though the show is in the kids genre, it really doesn't feel like it.
This anime centers around a cafe that four handsome guys run. Its a rather relaxing, chill, and wholesome show. The cafe has a traditional look and the guys also wear traditional clothes. So far a few episodes tells a little story of a different customer, and the guys helped them out with their problems. Some episodes focus one of the guys or the whole group. None of the episodes so far has been dramatic or emotional enough to get me to tears which is good in my opinion. I really like how destressing this show is I do recommend it if you want something chill. The four guys do get some screentime obviously, but their personalities aren't loud that they seem like side characters. It really adds to the calmness this show has.
This is a gag anime about magical girls and idols. Its rather silly and fast paced! You follow a young pink haired girl name Saki who is in a very unpopular duo idol unit with her childhood friend Sakuyo. Saki is in love with Sakuyo's older brother Mohiro who is a popular idol. Saki ends up becoming a magical girl but when she transforms she becomes a man in a magical girl outfit!
So far this show is entertaining and has made fun of a lot of anime tropes. I have no idea what will happen next, and the demons they're fighting so far are also as silly and even cute. I definitely recommend it unless you're new to anime the jokes may be confusing for you.
This anime was not at all what I thought it be. Each episode is 7 minutes long, and its a gag mecha anime. Its really silly. The main character Subaru is an oddball and likes being in his cockpit. He does some dumb stuff like eating and fixing his backwards shirt in his cockpit when he should be doing work. Its ridiculous, but at least its short.
Pop Team Epic or Poputepipikku is a weird anime that features two school girls doing outrageous nonsensical things. This is adapted from a 4 koma web comic, though I believe there are anime original skits. Each episode shows a number of skits, and will repeat those skits again with different voice actors for the two girls. This anime you may either like or hate. While it may seem random, it does parody our current culture and it does reference a bunch of things as well.
I do find this to be really unique, and there are a few skits that are done really creatively like the Hellshake Yano flip book one. What really kept me watching is the voice actors. They feature both female and male voice actors for the girls, Popuko and Pipimi. Each episode they have different people doing their voices and it got me as a seiyuu fan. Although honestly you're not missing anything worthwhile from watching this. Though the skits are short, so if you ever seen someone share a skit its probably a good on.e Not all of the skits are gold.
Sanrio Danshi may be a shameless advertisement for Sanrio, but its a cute story about a few high school boys who really like Sanrio goods. This is a slice of life anime that does focus on not being ashamed of the things you love and your hobbies.
I have to admit that this anime did make me cry a few times. I totally didn't expect it to make me cry, but the story behind the main protagonist got me. Luckily the story for the other guys have yet to make me cry again. The love for the Sanrio characters these boys have is uncommon, but overall I do like the message of you should enjoy the things you love. Also the message of not letting what others think of you stop you. There have been a few scenes of characters commenting on how girly or childish that they like Sanrio. At least the guys aren't alone and have each other. I do recommend it if this sounds interesting to you!
