ボーイフレンド(仮) or Boyfriend is an otome game but its also not really an otome game. Its like a card game and its very much like the Final Fantasy game I've played earlier. This game is only in Japanese and at the moment only available to play on a mobile browsers. There's also Girlfriends version of the game and it on iTunes and Googleplay put its restricted to Japan so you will need a Japanese account. You will need to sign up for a Ameba account to play these games. Interestingly enough there is a game by CyberAgent that you can download in the US iTunes titled in Japanese "萌えガチャ男子" where some of the same guys are in as well, but I will talk about that game in another post.

UPDATE! This game is now available on iTunes App store and GooglePlay but only in the Japanese store.

At the start of the game there is a tutorial. If you haven't played japanese card games like this before this would be pretty confusing. If you are playing this without little Japanese knowledge like myself then here's a tip: pink button is to confirm and the blue buttons is to cancel. This is an otome setting kind of game so it takes place at school. When you to "my page" with the house icon this is where you find the buttons to go to school or to battle. The circle in between the two buttons is your level. The left button is to go to school and you start off in class on the first day of spring. You just tap on the big pink button to go through your day(s) and either nothing happens, you meet with a guy who will introduce himself to you, get cards, a card gains points, or talk with a guy (this will boost his card stats temporarily). On the left side there are two meters. The top is a health meter which is needed to go through the school days. Each area of the school seem to take a certain number of health points. The meter below is like a experience meter so when it fill up you will level up. When you level up a pop with tell you if you want to add points to your stats. You use the points to either add more to your health bard, or to either your strength or defense which are for the battles.

I haven't done much with battles since there's a event for Setsubun at the moment. So far you get pieces of a secret photo of a guy. Below where there's numbered tabs and a star tab are your card decks that you use when you battle people. To battle there are two tabs above the 2x3 table of the secret photo (card really) and the right one is where you will find people around your level area to battle. Not entirely sure what else battles do but for events they're kind of important. During events you will get a separately event area to "go to school" on and you would encounter a person like a boss in a game. You can battle them later. Defeating them will give you event items which you need to have a chance at the event cards.

So what do cards do? At the top menu there is a feather icon that's the story page button. When you encounter a new guy's card the icon will have a numbered badge that indicates a new scene to see. There will be a list of guys with new scenes. Each has 8 total scenes and the first one is open when you get the card. To unlock the 2nd and 3rd one you will have to get the same card again and go to Step Up which is in the My Page or through Menu (tic-tac-toe looking icon on far right in top bar) and in menu its the icon with two people with a star between them. There will be a list of cards and duplicate cards. There are pink buttons by each card this is how you select one. It will change to have it selected and the list changes to cards of the guy. Choose one and click the bigger pink button to combine them. Then you get a new card with different art of the guy. You do this again for the 3rd scene. For the rest of the scenes you need keys. At the moment I don't know how to get more of these keys. Unlocking these scenes up the stars. To up their hearts you need to power them up which is the one to the left of the step up icon in menu. It should be the person with two diamond shaped sparkles icon. To power you card up go find the card you want to and it will be moved close to the top of the page. Then you need to select cards you want to combine it with. Don't use cards you want to use for battle here just use extras. The pink button will automatically select the cards for you, but if don't trust it then you tap on the box on the bottom right of the card info. When you're done selecting you tap the big blue button next to the pink one to confirm and then it will show you how much you leveled the card up. Also don't do this to cards that you haven't fully used Step Up on. I learned this the hard way when I Step Up a card I lost all the power up levels since it goes back to level 1. So be sure to power up when you finish Step Up! Also on the My Page screen there is another icon on the top that looks like a calender. This is where you set up "dates" but you need Date Tickets to do this. There is usually a line with a big pink number that tells yous how many dates you can set up. Tap on it and it will take you to choose a card. There will be a phone call scene and you pick a date. Now this isn't actually a "date" but during the date the card you choose will have a huge boost in their stats so its helpful if there are battles. You do get a simple scene the day of the date, but it will only show up once per card.

Another important part of the game is Cupid which is the cupids bow and arrow icon that you can find towards the bottom menu bar. This is where you get cards that requires coins which is currency you pay for with real money. When you reach a certain point in the game you will receive some free coins so if you want to try it you can. The results are random. There are offers to get free coins though like all free offers require some time. Below the coin required stuff is one you use cupid stamps for premium cupids and below that uses friend (tomodachi) points for normal cupids.

Overall, this game isn't too bad. The guys are appealing and there are many of them. Though with these card games it can feel repetitive over time but what game doesn't? The art and style is high quality and the guys even are voiced. Though only very few lines are voiced. The variety and number of cards can be confusing and overwhelming. One guy can get so many different cards and different sets have additional scenes. There are still some things I have yet to understand so I will update this post every now and then. Would definitely recommend to give this game a try.
