Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth 2 (Gyakuten Kenji 2)
Gyakuten Kenji 2 is the 6th Ace Attorney game and the sequel to Gyakuten Kenji, however it wasn't released outside of Japan so this post is based on the fan translation of the game. The fan translation kept the same translation style as the US games so the names are made to be English. Also the voices are in English as well. It takes place after Gyakuten Kenji so playing that before this would be helpful.First case is an attempted assassination of the president of Zheng Fa. The president is making a speech at Gourd Lake, and then two shots were heard. Edgeworth is called to investigate. This case isn't too long or short. It guides your on how to play the game, and there's a new feature called Logic Chess where Edgeworth tries to talk the witness to tell the truth. It has a time limit, but it doesn't seem to bad. Kay from the previous game also comes and join in which seemed like of out of the blue. Also like the previous game, there will be characters from the first 3 games appearing or vague mentionings.
The 2nd case happens after the first case and is connect to it as well. Edgeworth is visiting the prison and is notified that someone was murdered. This case is pretty long for a second case, but its quite puzzling so its not boring. A new judge and rookie prosecutor makes an appearance and they take you off the case. Edgeworth makes himself an assistant again like in the previous game in order to continue with the investigation. This time he makes himself the assistant of defense attorney, Mr Shields. Yes, Edgeworth is going to be on the defense team again. It is like being Phoenix Wright again where you have to save your client from being falsely accused. Which leads to the next.
The 3rd case starts with a flashback to 18 years ago where we follow Edgeworth's father, Gregory Edgeworth, and his assistant, a younger Mr. Shields, on Gregory's last case. The case is on a murder of a contestant of a competition. The competition is held by Master Jeff, a star pastry chef and singer and dancer of a musical cooking show. Master Jeff is the suspect for the murder so Gregory is there to defend him. Despite that this case is the perspective of a defense attorney the gameplay is still the same as before. But the investigation wasn't able to be complete so back to present time, Mr. Shields takes Miles Edgeworth with him to finish the case. This case is also a bit long and will switch back to the past and future too which is new. Sadly young Miles doesn't appear, but he is occasionally mentioned by his father. This case is quite a mystery as it had me puzzled for quite a bit of it. Although the story to it isn't something I've had interest in with the exception of the Edgeworth family. I have to admit the ending of this case had me shed a tear.
Now with the 4th case, Edgeworth is due to have his actions questioned by the Prosecutor Investigation Committee who have been sort of the enemy in this game. Since Edgeworth wasn't allowed to be in charge with most of the cases in this game, and even get threats of taking his prosecutors badge away from him several times. Edgeworth is reconsidering his way of life, again. Then a bandage girl with amnesia is taken to him, and he agrees to help her. While trying to help her regain her memories they get caught up in another murder case. It is kind of easy to figure out who the culprit is. This case isn't the most interesting though there is quite a bit of character development that made this case interesting.
The 5th and last case happens immediately after the 4th case is finished. Edgeworth and co. head out and gets asked for help for a murder that happened in the filming lot next door. You work with Agent Lang from the last game again. He has appeared in this game very briefly, but now he has relevance. This game is connected to the previous cases so some characters are returning. Also this case is quite long and has parts. Other than the murder there is a kidnapping as well. You also actually get to be in court for a bit! There's also linking an old case to the current one going on as well. I have to admit the end was a surprise and quite thrilling. I think it really makes all these games worth it!
Overall, this game far surpassed my expectations and would rate it as highly as Trials and Tribulations! Its too bad this game never go released outside of Japan, but thank goodness for fan translators. Definitely check this game out if you're into this series!
