BBC Sherlock series 4
After some years, the 4th Sherlock series finally airs this year! This modern theme to the beloved story has gotten quite a huge global following. There has been some mixed reviews of how the story in the series is being handled, so it'll be interesting to see how this series will take theses characters to. There's only 3 episodes for this series and the final on just finished airing. Its definitely different, and worth watching if you wanted something different. There are some great scenes and some silly scenes. Overall, its not a bad and it left me somewhat satisfied. As a warning, this post will has spoilers so please don't continue. Go watch the show!
This series no longer has Sherlock solving weird murder crimes, but more secretive high level stuff. So the first episode centers around Mary and her past. They did an interesting twist to a few of the orignal Sherlock stories into this episode, but I wasn't impressed with the past they gave Mary. While I am aware that Sherlock does have boxing skills, I feel the fighting scene in this was way too long. I saw some people thought it was too spy movie like which I can agree too though I don't entirely mind it that much. If you are familiar with the original Sherlock stories then you will know that Mary has died. This Mary will also die but she does it to save Sherlock which sounds good though the circumstances they made that happen was not as moving as it should be. I rather liked her as a character, but I know she is disliked by people for a number of reasons none of which I find to be understandable.
The second episode I liked the most from this series. Sherlock gets a case from Mary to save John. After her death, John doesn't want to see Sherlock. Hard to save John when he's avoiding you, so Sherlock has gone to drugs which has worried Mrs Hudson enough to get John to see him. Mrs Hudson really shined in this episode! The way the writers made Sherlock figure out every move John would do in three weeks is a bit silly, but it made me chuckle a bit. Sherlock takes on a case of the daughter of a famous person who she thinks is a killer. A serial killer. I like that they had the drugs take a big effect on Sherlock's skills as he nearly attacked the man out of hallucinations. Seeing John subdue him like that was definitely a new thing. We eventually see the details of Mary's case to save John. She asks Sherlock to put himself in danger so John can save him. I didn't quite expected it to be like this, though its not a bad idea. Even though it was mostly set up, it was an understandable way to get the boys back again. The twist at the end were we find out that 3 minor characters were actually the same person in disguise was shocking. That impressed me, and it got me excited for the next episode.
So the final episode is on Sherlock's past, and the forgotten sibling, their sister Eurus. She's the dangerously smart one that had to be locked up in an isolated island. She seems mad, but they never labled her as mad in the episode. The start the episode like a horror movie with Mycroft as the victim. It was cliche but it ends up being a setup by Sherlock and John for keeping the sister information from them. For some reason the sister went back to the island even though she escaped. This episode definitely turned into like a Saw movie with having her makes the boys to go through her puzzles and demands. Another new things to see the boys go through that we never seen before. It didn't make much sense why she was doing this until at the end she just wanted to play with Sherlock and save her. Sherlock tried to save his brother and John by shooting himself instead, but the sister, Eurus, stopped it. Not sure how Sherlock and John got transported somewhere else, but after Sherlock solved Eurus' puzzle from their childhood things seem to be back to normal. Eurus isn't set free or anything, but I suppose having Sherlock visit was enough. The episode ended with Mary narrating as Sherlock and Watson have the flat fixed up and them solving things like usual. It was definitely a way to end a show though there was a fifth series being talked about back in 2014 which was 3 years ago.
This series has definitely been different. While some things don't really make sense, seem practical, or just plain silly I still enjoyed this show. The characters and their relationship are whats really keeping me interested in this show than the mysteries. I didn't expect that they kill Mary off this soon, and if a fifth does happen I do wonder if the mysteries will be back or not. It will be interesting to see how the two will handle with the baby as well. Though it is also possible the baby won't even be shown in the fifth as John can just conveniently have someone look after her whenever or something. Overall, this 4th series is terrible and if a fifth happens I will watch it.
