So I am really late to the Attorney game. At first I really didn't find the game about attorneys to be all that interesting so I never bothered. Though recently I did watch some people play it, and they definitely sold the game series to me. This post will just be about the first game that came out in 2001.

The game is about a rookie defense attorney name Phoenix Wright (Naruhodo Ryuichi in the Japanese version) who works under Mia Fey in Fey and Co. Offices. Your first trial is a tutorial so Mia is going to tell you how the game works. Some of the names has some interesting puns in this game that I think the Japanese version also has. The game has a lot of comfy comedy tone rather than drama or thriller despite the cases being murders. Playing the game is rather simple, but not short. Basically you go do investigations to gather information and clues. Then when the trial starts you listen to the witnesses and find contradictions in their testimony. You keep finding contradictions by pressing and presenting evidences to the court, and the story will proceed till you get your client to be found not guilty.

This game has five cases, and each can take hours to complete. The last one is very long! The reason for the length is that each case has a lot of back story that you must uncover in order to find the truth because your clients are always innocent. I think the way the cases' stories are handled is very well done. At first you can only guess and get an idea, but when the trail starts you start to piece together the whole picture as Pheonix goes on to say what really happens.

Looking and studying the evidence is the key to winning in court. The game is a point and click so you can't do much with evidence besides reading descriptions and pointing things out in court. In the last case, you do get more options! You have the ability to further looking into objects and they turn 3D so you can actually open it by clicking on areas. Also you get to testing for fingerprints with powders and a spray to find hidden blood remnants.

What I find most charming about this game is the characters. Most of the characters have quite a personality, and it makes it very entertaining for such a simple gameplay kind of game. Other than Mia there is also her sister Maya who is a very important character. Detective Gumshoe and Prosecutor Miles Edgeworth are introduced as your enemies at first, but they are main characters also. You get to know about them a lot more as you go through the game.

The art is obviously anime, but it is nicely done in my opinion with the small animations with pixel art. Also there's not same face issue like most anime styles tend to have. Every character is very unique. The music too is nice and it keeps you going.

Overall, this game is great and I understand the hype for this series. Definitely recommend it! I will post more about each game as I go through them.
