The Handmaid's Tale (2017)
This show is based on a book of the same name, and quite a few people recommended. I was hesitant since its about women being only used for making babies which deterred me quite a bit. Though I did end up watching the first episode, and I got hooked. Its well done for this distopia setup of a world were fertility is drastically declined, and the majority of the US is taken over by some crazy religious people.
The story follows June who is a handmaiden. The show goes between the present and past of her life. June has a husband and a little girl, but they all get separated. Since she's fertile she is taken to be a handmaiden. Its a rather messed up business. Handmaids have to abandon their name and are given a name based of the man they are assigned to. For June, she is called Offred. She lives in the same house as the man name Fred, who has an important position. His wife Serena has been trying to have a child, but hasn't had any luck. She isn't kind to June though since women can no longer have a job or read, having a child is probably all Serena has to focus on.
The show focuses on the mental agony of being a handmaiden, and the horror of the brutal killings of those who rebel. How the system even work is weird and doesn't make much sense though I try not to let it bother me. It is overall a good show so I do recommend it. They didn't make it seem as awful as I thought it be given the lack of consent that's going on as horrible as that sounds. A second season is coming so I will be watching that as well.
