Attack on Titan: Wings of Freedom game (Shingeki no Kyojin)
I watched the livestream the night the game released in Japan. This Attack on Titan game looked interesting, but also not really. It is the type of game fans of the series wanted. Being able to fly around and slash up as many titans as we can. After the game came out, the DLC came out which were a mystery at that time. But when they each came out, they were amazing. I mean sure they're only themed weapons and outfits, but seeing the characters wearing them is just amazing to see. It makes me laugh. I look forward to them being out for the western version.
This game is available on Steam, which surprised me. And it surprised me again when it had to be run with Windows 7 compatibility. So the port is a bit wonky, as I hear people saying the mic on multiplayer crashes the game or something. I don't play multiplayer so I can't give my own experiences. I have a 2 year old laptop, and I am surprised I was able to run this game. Sure, I need to have the settings on low and have a smaller resolution screen, but its playable. It does lag when there's a lot of stuff going on, but as long as it doesn't crash I am fine with it.
Story mode of this game is like an abridged of the first season of the anime. After that it does go beyond the season so if you don't want spoilers to season 2, I'd suggest stopping at the end of Chapter 3. In order to proceed with the season 2 stuff you will have to do the survey missions which are side quest kind of missions. This game could be a good refresher of the story before season 2 starts. There is only Japanese voices which is fine with me because I prefer it that way. As for gameplay, I did think that this was going to be repetitive but its surprisingly doesn't feel like it. It did take me a bit to get use to controls which I expected. Every titan has the same target points. The annoying part is when they move around and sometimes get clipped into buildings. Obstruction like trees, other soldiers, and stuff does cut your wire which happens too often for me. Also, the resupplying is also a frustrating issue. The npc that have the supplies do get killed since they do nothing, but you really don't have time to just kill every titan before they kill the npcs. Luckily you have teammates. You can recruit npcs to fight with you or other characters might join you when you answer to their green signal. When you are out of blades or gas, you can get them to help you finish the job. One thing I didn't like is not being able to switch between titans easily. You'd have to unlock combat mode, and run around till your row of squares point to the right titan then you can go to combat mode. This is hard to do when there's a lot of titans around flopping and kicking.
The epilogue part of the game can take awhile because of doing all the survey missions. Also the characters give you quests which are just "Do 15 side missions" kind of things. Completing them do give you a nice little voiced scene between some of the characters which is enjoyable to me as a fan of this series. The last epilogue cutscene is triggered when you've completed some missions in Southern Region Unexplored Battlefield in survey missions. When you finish the epilogue, the game will give you a new mode called True Attack Mode. This is like new game plus, you start the story over (don't worry it won't get rid of your original one), but the difficulty is much harder. A tough titan showed up outside the tutorial training area and one hit barely did any damage to it. Its also kind of unsettling hearing the other characters like normally when there's a titan so close by.
This game can get difficult, and I do think it is a tad expensive. But I do find this game to be fun, and funny with the DLC costumes. I do hope that when season 2 finishes that they will add more to this game instead of probably making a new one. I do recommend it even if you don't know about the series. Its a great stress reliever too. I've already played about 20 hours of this game and there's still more stuff I didn't finish. People are probably going to compare it to that fan made browser game, and its definitely up to you which you prefer. There are a lot of things I enjoy in this official game than that browser game.
