Neko wa Daku Mono - The Cat in Their Arms (2018)

Neko wa Daku Mono is a Japanese movie that I thought was going to be a cute story about cats, but its not. I don't know why but half of the movie is filmed on a real set, and half on a theatre stage set. There's even one scene that's in 2D animation. I watched this for Yoshizawa Ryo who plays as one of the cats. This isn't about cats that turn into humans though. The actors that play as the cats are only for the cat's perspective of the story. The movie's story is about Saori who isn't very happy with her life. She was an idol of a group called Sunnies who got a one hit wonder song, but since the group broke up she then ends up as a supermarket cashier. She takes care of a cat named Yoshio in a storage room since cats aren't allowed in her apartment.

Even though the stage setting is weird, I do like the story even if its more depressing than I expected. Saori's struggle with the lack of opportunities from her time as an idol struck me a bit. The loneliness and the embarrassment she goes through I think anyone can understand. She opens up to her cat Yoshio. Yoshio's story is that he thinks he's human because all the love Saori gave him makes him believe he's her boyfriend. He meets other cats that tell him otherwise. Ryo plays as Yoshio and wore probably the tightest clothes I've ever seen him in all the movies and shows I've watched so far. Yoshio is almost dog like with how much he likes Saori. Its cute! Other than that, this is quite a weird movie. Not sure if I would recommend it, but I do end up liking it.
