Free! Dive to the Future (2018)
I didn't think a season 3 for Free! will be real but its here and its airing at the moment. If you haven't read the light novels, the High Speed! movie, or the 3 compilation movies (Yakusoku, Kizuna, Time Medley) then you will be a bit lost when you start watching this new season.
This season takes place a year after season 2 Eternal Summer so many of the characters are separated so there's a bit of jumping around since they want everyone to appear in this new season. But the main focus is always on Haru and this time it seems a reunion of his middle school relay team. Haru happens to go to the same college as two of his middle school friends, Asahi and Kisumi. They find out that another middle school swim member, Ikuya, is in Japan and still swims. They want to meet and talk to him, but a guy name Hiyori is trying to prevent them from seeing Ikuya.
So far, this new season is pretty good. It is quite different due to the new setting and having to change the story telling a bit to accommodate everybody. The first few episodes is slow paced since they need to add some backstory. Also Utsumi is no longer part of Free! so that also adds to the difference in this season but the writer is the same. I am curious to see how the story unfold so I will continue to watch it. I haven't seen enough to say whether I can recommend it or not. So far it doesn't have silly fun scenes as in the previous episodes nor does it have edgy dubstep for the antagonist as there was before. Its pretty mellow in comparison which I don't mind. I like how more calm and less dramatic this season is so far, but it could all change later. Everybody seems to dislike Hiyori which is understandable. Can't wait to see how Kyoani will redeem him later.
